The May edition of the congress newsletter is focused on the knee, a key programme and abstract topic of the WSTC & 7th EFOST Congress 2012.
Organising Committee member Mr. Mike Carmont, in his dual role as Board Member of BOSTAA and Sessional Secretary of EFOST, provides his thoughts on this topic:
"With one ankle inversion injury per 10000 people per day the ankle may be considered to be the most injured and worked joints in sports. Repeated injury leads to chronic instability, chondral defect and the formation of bone spurs possibly precursors of osteoarthritis. The management of all these pathologies are contentious areas in sports trauma.
Are we able to prevent further injuries? Inversions typically occur 130-180ms after initial contact and with trained peroneal antagonists corrections may occur within 80ms. Can we improve the latency of dysfunctional peroneus longus? How do we predict the 1 in 20 of athletes and patients that does not settled with non-operative management? Factors may include lower dynamic stiffness reduced co-contraction and having relatively inverted ankles.".....continue reading.
